Renaissance Learning's Growth Story
Judi and Terry Paul founded Renaissance Learning in the basement of their central Wisconsin home in 1984. Judi Paul developed Accelerated Reader, now the world’s most widely used K12 reading software, to encourage her children to read more and better books.
When the Pauls began selling AR to schools, the response was overwhelming, and a mere 12 years later Renaissance was ranked as the number 3 provider of professional development nationally. Accelerated Reader was followed by Accelerated Math and STAR assessments. The company was among the first to introduce an integrated Web-based platform (Renaissance Place) and the SaaS model to K12.
Today, Renaissance Learning is the leading provider of cloud-based assessment, teaching, and learning solutions with over 950 employees and customers in over one-third of U.S. schools and more than 60 countries worldwide. Hellman & Friedman acquired the company in 2014. While many things have changed over the years, the Renaissance Learning mission of accelerating learning for all still burns as brightly as ever.
